23 imagesIn regions of Altai mountains the red deer farming has existed since 1930s though firstly for economic purposes red deer in this area were collected in the second half of 19th century. Here, in Souzar and Talda villages farms run about two thousand animals. For deer keeping large area of mountain forest is fenced and animals live in the natural conditions. Deer are herded here for their antler velvet which is a very valuable product for holistic medicine in East Asia countries as well as in Russia where a range of medication is produced from antler velvet and deer's blood. Antlers grow as spongy tissue filled with blood and covered in a soft velvet skin. The harvesting of antler velvet starts at the beginning of May and continues until the middle of summer when antlers become a hard bone. Cut antlers are boiled by special technology, then dried and milled to a powder which is used in pharmacology and sold to markets of East Asia.
